National Day of Prayer

Why a National Day of Prayer?

Do we have to make God aware of the problems we're all facing? If so, then God is not omniscient.

If God is in fact omniscient, He sees all the injustices and horrors in this world that we so earnestly pray for him to rid us of. Furthermore, it is said in the Bible that 'with God all things are possible' (Matt 19:26). So God is also omnipotent. However, James 4:17 says, "Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins." Therefore, knowing how to do right by His innocent children here on Earth and having the capabilities to spare them all misery and pain and yet refusing to do so, God does sin. By Christian standards, God is imperfect. Otherwise, God is not omnipotent.

What does it mean if God blesses the prayers of 100 people who want to raise enough money to renovate their church, but ignores the child praying in tears every night to be free of his abusive father?

Shall we pray to this God?

  1. Prayer can be beneficial for people but it is I think often in the same way that just talking to someone completely in trust about all your troubles feels wonderful.

To believe that you are telling someone about everything and they can actually help you feels even better. It fulfills for some people a psychological need. The idea that god would really need you to tell him for him to know that you need help is to me a sad one though.

  2. What you're saying is true, but is it not better to talk to an actual person who you love and trust?

    1) You know they're listening
    2) You know they care
    3) You actually get a reply

In my own experience, I never -really- felt God was listening, though I tried my best to believe that he did. God never replied. Never changed anything.

Faithful friends actually help. They console. They even help you work toward a solution.

I'd much rather put my trust in a friend with limitations and faults who wants to help than an all powerful and all knowing God who ignores me.
